No ZEN for me. But I do confess to a distinct pleasure in producing a work-fit razor edge on a tool.Sometimes the art can overwhelm the purpose. But then reality awakens and it's back to making curls in wood.MT

The Veritas Honing Guide at Lee Valley is now dropped in price to $36.50, because they have a newer one they want to sell. With one of those and a couple of
DMT Diamond Sharpening Whetstone's (get one fine and one extra fine), you'll get good consistant edges on firmers (straight chisels.)

That's about $100 for the above mentioned stuff, but you would pay that in service fees to have a set of chisels sharpened a few times.

Now, for sharpening gouges, I woulld love to have someone sharpen mine with the correct equipment.

Dennis
What does it cost to do bad work with dull chisels?
Another quotable quote from a sharp wit. Rick, we're glad you are here!

When I was first starting out I tried to pay to have mine done. The guy at the sharpening service said "sure I do chisels, but I won't do yours". Meaning that I really needed to learn to do them myself. It was great advice as I strop an edge on them almost weekly. I couldn't imagine paying for that.

I use the drum on my thickness sander to grind a hollow bevel (I don't own a grinder), then the scary sharp method with a cheap honing guide to hone a fine edge. Only takes a few minutes.

Woodcraft used to do it, don't know if they still do. It'll say in their catalog.

I hope you are not running your DC at the same time... (not-so-fopndly remembering my own belt sander / plane iron / shop vac incident some years back. No, I did not set the shop on fire, but it was too close )

Happy Birthday John.

My wife is convinced that I am under the impression that I have a birthday every week.

Happy Birthday, John! And thank Debbie for setting a generous precedent for all of the OLF wives to emulate!

Now, boys...make sure you show this post to your wives or significant others.

Thanks JJ & Don, but this was a present from good ol JH to JH. Debbie did take me out for a fine steak dinner last night though. I can't wait to sharpen up my stuff. It's just in time too cause I got some binding and mitering to do soon.
.001 full length, full width shavings in curly maple. Chisels are pretty sharp as well. If you can't read through the shaving, your tools are not sharp enough to work with.
Yowser! Todd, this just about makes you the "GURU of SHARP!"

I'm impressed. I could only read thru my shavings if my name was Superman. Kudos to you.

I'm gonna send you a plane to get working like this! It would be fun just to see this done. Most people mess around with a plane a while, get disqusted and never pick it up again. I'm almost that committed to them. But with results like you have above, you could start a luthier revolution to hand tools..... no joke.

Check out my latest planing effort in this laminated hard maple bench core. I used 3 Anant planes (#4, #5, #7) upgraded with Hock irons and chip breakers. Each one produces full-width long and thin curls. I use the scary sharp method and strop frequently to keep the curls consistently thin and long. I learned sooo much during the many hours it took to level the bench over the weekend. This was by far the hardest wood I've ever attempted during my short, never-ending, self-imposed apprentiship. Without proper setup and quality blades I'm sure I would have failed miserably. Keep the faith, Bruce...anybody can do it if I can.

I'm sold on the polished and shimmery surface that quality planing produces...it far exceeds anything that I can get from sanding even with the finest grit papers.

Nice work bench JJ. I'm just getting my new setup bench ready to go. I'll have some pics up soon.
